HUMAN EVIDENCE: Why ZINE Began with Four Sikkim Photographs

The founding collection is intentionally small: two unique Polaroids and two tightly controlled medium-format editions made in Sikkim in 2025.

The central idea

A preservation house should begin with clarity, not volume. Four works were chosen because together they show the essential ZINE idea: environment, chemistry, human presence and provenance can begin inside the artwork rather than being reconstructed years later.

02

What the evidence shows

Polaroids #03 holds a cold-induced blue shift. Doesn’t Matter #1 records resilience at 15,300 feet. Waiting #4 turns an ordinary morning pause into a silver gelatin object. Reflections #01 compresses subject, glass and mountain into one unique instant-film surface.

Collection 01 is read through object-level evidence: location, camera, film, weather, collaborators, physical source and edition status. The story is valuable because it is anchored to verifiable material facts.

03

What collectors should notice

A coherent collection is stronger when each object has a reason to exist. Study how the four records speak to one another, where their processes differ and why their edition rules match the physical source.

  • Why was this work selected?
  • Which physical source supports it?
  • How does it differ from the other founding records?
04

The ZINE position

ZINE preserves each founding work as a distinct object rather than treating the wider project as an unlimited image catalogue.

The aim is not to turn process into mythology. It is to keep the object, its limits and the human moment behind it understandable for the next collector.
