What We Learned Returning to Sikkim After a Failed 2021 Shoot

A costly failure became the foundation for a slower return built on film, natural light, observation and a different mindset.

01

The central idea

Failure becomes useful when it changes the next decision. The 2021 snow project relied on unsuitable choices and lost the natural detail of the landscape. The return was designed around attention rather than correction.

02

What the evidence shows

For the 2025 project, Sourish chose film over digital abundance, Sunny 16 over dependence on a meter and natural light over on-camera flash. The approach did not remove risk; it made every risk visible and intentional.

An artist's philosophy becomes credible when it changes decisions in the field. Restraint, collaboration, failure, time and observation can all become visible through process.

03

What collectors should notice

Ask artists what changed between attempts. Process history can reveal whether a mature work is a lucky image or the result of accumulated judgment, restraint and responsibility.

  • Which decision expresses the artist's philosophy?
  • Who else shaped the work?
  • What changed through experience or failure?
04

The ZINE position

ZINE preserves the creator's account beside material evidence so emotion and fact can support rather than replace each other.

The aim is not to turn process into mythology. It is to keep the object, its limits and the human moment behind it understandable for the next collector.
